Creswick, Victoria

Creswick is an old gold mining town in the early 1850s, 20 km north of Ballarat and 130 km north- west of Melbourne in the state of Victoria in Australia and is 452 m above sea level. The city is now a small industrial site on the Midland Highway with its historic center and has about 2,500 inhabitants.

History

The place was named after the sheep farmers brothers Henry, Charles and John Creswick. 1852 was discovered at Creswick Creek gold and in August 1854 began the construction of the city. From 1857 there was an Anglican and a Catholic church, a courthouse was added in 1859.

Up to 30,000 gold miners are said to have lived at peak times of the gold rush in Creswick. But already in the referendum ( Census ) of 1861 only 4,714 inhabitants, most inhabitants were counted since then.

1863 the first hospital was opened in 1869 was added the first major school ( Grammar School ).
