Alexander Vallaury

Alexandre Vallaury (* March 1850 in Istanbul, † May 6, 1921 ) was an active in the Ottoman Empire Levantine architect of French origin.

Valaury belonged to the wealthy " Frankish ", that is, a mixture of French and Italian -speaking minority, his father Francesco Vallaury was a confectioner, and purveyor of the Sublime Porte. Alexandre Vallaury made ​​from 1869 to 1878 his education at the École nationale supérieure des beaux -arts in Paris and returned to his homeland in 1880, where he entered into a cooperation with the Turkish archaeologist and founder of the Archaeological Museum Istanbul, Osman Hamdi Bey.

Vallaurys oeuvre includes numerous buildings in the style of a slightly oriental historicism, especially the one-time mainly inhabited by Europeans Galata district, his best known work is probably the Pera Palas. Vallaury also worked for 25 years as professor and founder of the department of architecture at the Ecole des Beaux- founded in 1882 in Istanbul Arts ( Sanayi -i Nefise Mektebi, now called Mimar Sinan University ). He received numerous medals and awards including membership of the French Legion of Honour ( 1896).
