Alf Dubs, Baron Dubs

Alfred Dubs, Baron Dubs ( born December 5, 1932 in Prague ) is a British Labour Party politician and a former member of the House.

Youth and Education

Dubs comes from Czechoslovakia. He was one of the 699 mostly Jewish Czech children who emigrated to Britain in the framework initiated by the English stockbroker Nicholas Winton action Kindertransport from the German Reich and the occupied territories. His father had fled on the day of the German invasion of Czechoslovakia to England. His mother was originally a visa was denied, but she could travel a short time later to England.

Dubs learned the truth about Nicholas Winton's story through a radio broadcast in 1988. Later he met Winton personally and fought for his award. Winton was knighted in 2002.

Dubs studied at the London School of Economics. Then he worked for a local authority.

Career

Dubs in 1979 in the constituency of Battersea South and 1983 elected in the constituency of Battersea in the British House of Commons. In 1987, he lost his re-election. From 1988 to 1995 he was Director of the Refugee Council. In 1994, he was raised as Baron Dubs for life peer. He drew for the Labour Party at the House of Lords. From 1997 to 1999 he was Parliamentary Under- Secretary of State at the Northern Ireland Office.

Lord Dubs worked at the regional health authority. He was chairman of the Broadcasting Standards Commission in the Office of Communications and served as vice chairman iun the Independent Television Commission. He is a trustee of the Open University Foundation.

He was active as a council member and chairman and trustee of various social organizations.

2008 was Lord Dubs very active in the House of Lords; He participated in 42 debates, which is significantly above the average peers. He gave speeches in many areas. He works with the parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights.

He is currently Chairman of the Road Safety Foundation and Vice President of the Debating Group.
