Alfredo Rodrigues Gaspar

Alfredo Rodrigues Gaspar ( born August 8, 1865 in Funchal, † December 1, 1938 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese sea captain, statesman and Prime Minister (Presidente do Conselho de Cabinet Ministers ) during the First Republic.

Life

Rodrigues Gaspar initially began a military career as an officer of the Navy ( Marinha Portuguesa ), during which he rose to Captain. In addition, he began after the founding of the First Republic, on October 6, 1910 a political career. As a member of the Partido Democrático he was repeatedly the deputies of the Parliament ( Assembleia da República ) is selected.

First, he was Minister for the Colonies of 12 December 1914 to 25 January 1915 Cabinet Vítor Hugo de Azevedo Coutinho. A position he took over later in the governments of Jose de Castro and Afonso Augusto da Costa of 17 May 1915 to 15 March 1916.

Between 1918 and 1919 he was then President of the City Council of Lisbon. Subsequently, he was re- Colonial Minister in the governments of Alfredo de Sá Cardoso on 30 June 1919 and January 3, 1920 and by António Maria da Silva of 7 February 1922 to 22 November 1923.

On 7 July 1924 he was appointed as the successor of Álvaro de Castro as Prime Minister (Presidente do Conselho de Cabinet Ministers ). But as many cabinets of the First Republic was also his government only a few months in office and was replaced on 22 November 1924 by José Domingues dos Santos. In his cabinet he was also Minister of the Interior and for a time from July 6 through July 22, also Minister of Agriculture.
