Algirdas Julien Greimas

Algirdas Julien Greimas (originally Algirdas Julius Greimas, born March 9, 1917 in Tula, † 27 February 1992 in Paris) was a semiotician and co-founder of the School of Paris.

Life

Greimas studied law in Lithuania and in Grenoble (1936-1939) linguistics. In 1939 he returned to Lithuania back, became a soldier and fought against the German Wehrmacht. In 1944 he went to Paris and completed his studies at the Sorbonne. He then worked as a lecturer at the universities in Ankara, Istanbul, Poitiers and Alexandria. In Alexandria, he met Roland Barthes know. Between them an intensive exchange and a relationship developed. In 1965 he became a professor in Paris.

Theory and work

Greimas published in 1966 his " These structural semantics ", arguing that modern Textsemiotik. Greimas developed here a structural analysis, which closely aligned with the tradition and development of concepts of Saussure and Hjelmslev. Greimas founded therefore on the Parisian school as an independent direction in semiotics. The narrative text is the focus of analysis Greimas.
