Life

Riza was in present-day Thessaloniki, then part of the Ottoman Empire, was born. He grew up as the child of a Muslim family.

Ali Riza's family comes from the village Kocacık in the former Ottoman Empire and today's Macedonia, where a memorial was opened in honor of Atatürk in September 2012. It is believed that Riza is of Albanian descent. The other view is the journalist and connoisseur of Atatürk Falih Rıfkı Atay, who claims that Ali Riza descended from Turks from Soke in the vilayet of Aydın.

Riza worked for a time as a customs officer on a remote post on the Macedonian border. When he died, his son Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was only seven years old.
