Alick Buchanan-Smith

Alick Laidlaw Buchanan -Smith PC ( born April 8, 1932 in Edinburgh, † August 29, 1991 ) was a Scottish politician and Minister of the Conservative Party.

Education and Family

The second son of Alick Drummond Buchanan -Smith, Baron Balerno, and Mary Kathleen Smith in 1951, a soldier in the regiment of the " Gordon Highlanders ".

Member of the House of

Buchanan -Smith ran unsuccessfully in 1959 initially for the constituency of West Fife. In 1964 he was elected for the constituency of North Angus and Mearns in the House of Commons and represented that constituency there until 1983. Member of the Government

Together with George Younger and Hector Monro, he was from 1970 to 1974 in the cabinet of Edward Heath worked as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in Scotland ministry. In the Cabinets of Margaret Thatcher, he was taken first, followed from 1979 to 1983 Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and until 1987, Minister of State at the Department of Energy. In memory of him the " Alick Buchanan Smith Spirit of Enterprise Award" is given, which is to promote businesses with new ideas and local relevance.
