Alison Uttley

Alison Uttley ( born December 17, 1884 in Cromford, † May 7, 1976 in Derbyshire, full name Alice Jane Taylor) was a British writer.

Life

Alison Uttley, came on 17 December 1884, when Alice Jane Taylor to the world. She grew up in Derbyshire Cromford. She first attended the Lea School in Holloway, later, the Lady Manners School in Bakewell. Alison Uttley developed a taste for science, which led to a scholarship at the University of Manchester. She studied physics and finished her studies, as by then second wife of England, with a university degree. Then she went to Cambridge and studied teaching of physics there. From 1908 she taught at the Fulham Secondary School for Girls.

In 1911 she met James Arthur Uttley and married him. Four years later, son John Corin Taylor to the world ( 1915-1978 ). Through his participation in the First World War, the health of James Arthur Uttley deteriorated rapidly. He died in 1930. As a single mother Alison Uttley had to find a way to keep herself and her son financially afloat. So she began writing children's books.

Services

Her first children's book published in 1929 under the original title: The Squirrel, The Hare and the Little Grey Rabbit - this was the beginning of the highly successful Grey Rabbit series. Alison Uttley wrote more than 100 books, including the well-known story A Traveller in Time. This is about a girl from the 21st century, which undertakes a journey into the 16th century with the help of the pig Sam. There, the two support a family in their efforts to save the Scottish queen Mary. However Among her most famous works are the stories about Mademoiselle squirrel, master lamp and Graupfötchen (English original title: " The Squirrel, the Hare at the little gray rabbit " )

Awards

Alison Uttley received in 1970 the degree Honorary Doctor of Letters. This gave her the University of Manchester, because of their literary achievements.
