Allan Kaprow

Allan Kaprow ( born August 23, 1927 in Atlantic City, † April 5, 2006 in Encinitas in San Diego ) was an American artist and art theoretician of action art. To him the term " Happening " is back.

Life

Kaprow studied art, art history and composition. He was strongly influenced by the composer John Cage, and sought the abstract expressionism of Jackson Pollock overcome.

In the center of his art were space and gesture. He organized together with George Maciunas, George Brecht and Al Hansen first happenings in New York ( at the Reuben Gallery) and produced Environments on. His writings on art theory include important theses on Environment, Happenings and Intermedia Art

Work

Kaprow is considered the father of the happenings, an art term he coined in New York in 1958. Happenings were hybrid forms of avant-garde performances - with no apparent drama and collage-like, often simultaneously organized events, with blurred boundaries between performers and audience, the sense of appealing, open to chance and improvisation, as well as the surrounding, everyday situations - where a variety of art media (painting, music, dance, theater) were disguised as ordinary everyday objects ( newspaper, noise, body movements, everyday activities ) and joined together to theater-like events.

Since 1958, more than 250 of Allan Kaprow's Happenings and Activities have been implemented, including of major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Walker Art Center ( Minneapolis ), MIT (Cambridge, MA ), the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris) and the Documenta in Kassel.

In October 2006, the Haus der Kunst in Munich offered a retrospective of his work. The estate of Allan Kaprow is represented by Hauser & Wirth Zurich London.
