Allan Wells

Allan Wipper Wells ( May 3, 1952 in Edinburgh ) is a British athlete.

Wells was initially a long and triple jumper and focused from the early 1970s to the sprint distances. In the Commonwealth Games 1978 he won two gold medals (200 m, 4x100 m relay ) and one silver (100 m).

Wells never used starting blocks, until he was forced by a rule change before the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow to do so. The strong U.S. team boycotted the games, and so Wells reached the 100 m final. Wells won the race in the comparatively slow time of 10.25 seconds, and was then the oldest 100 m Olympic champion ever. He dedicated this win to Eric Liddell. About 200 meters was Wells Second, the 4x100 m relay in fourth.

In 1982 he won at the Commonwealth Games gold in the 100 and 200 meters. However, Wells could not keep up with the world and reached peak at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, only the semi-finals of the 100-m race.
