Allanburg (Ontario)

Allanburg [ ælənbəɹg ] is a municipality within Thorold, a city in Ontario. It lies on the Welland Canal and Highway 20, which are both important transportation routes in the Niagara Peninsula.

Both paths will cross a drawbridge, referred to as the bridge 11 of the Saint Lawrence Seaway Authority ( Water Police ), but is often referred to simply as " Allanburg Bridge". 2001, the bridge was known by a collision with a ship nationally.

Inauguration of Wellandkanals

On November 30, 1824 the cornerstone was laid for the building of the first Wellandkanals. Today, a stone pyramid on the western driveway is reminiscent to the lifting bridge at this event.

Windoc incident

On August 9, 2001 at about 9 clock in the evening the large freighter Windoc collided with the lifting bridge. The wheelhouse of the ship and the chimney was torn down by the collision and a fire broke out on board. Leaderless drove the ship down the river, and ran about 800 meters away from the bridge due. Fire Brigade troops from the entire region around Niagara were involved in efforts to extinguish the fire and parked their fire engines on the banks of the channel. There were no deaths, because the crew could leave the wheelhouse before it was destroyed. The canal was opened for navigation again two days later, but the bridge was initially secured in the position in which it was at the time of the accident, to give engineers the opportunity to study the causes of accident and repair the bridge. The traffic through the center of Niagara was chaotic at this time, because the options were limited to cross the channel. Detours through the Thorold Tunnel in the north of Allanburg had to be accepted to go to Niagara.

Finally, the damage to the bridge could be found and corrected. Since the event the Windoc at the Port of Montreal is fixed, unable to maneuver and with a flooded hull. The subsequent investigation determined that the drowsy bridge guards the bridge condescended to some extent before the ship could leave the danger zone.
