Allen & Overy is a global law firm with headquarters in London. The company now has about 5,000 employees ( 2700 Lawyers ) in 42 offices in 29 countries in Europe, America, Australia and the Middle East. The firm advises large corporations, financial institutions and governments, and is the Magic Circle British firms counted.

In Germany, the law firm with 175 lawyers in Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Mannheim and Munich. In fiscal year 2011/12 it achieved a turnover of 113 million euros.

History

Allen & Overy was founded in 1930 by George Allen and Thomas Overy, lawyers of the law firm Roney & Co. in London. The company was an early point in advising Canadian banks and companies. In 1978, the law firm opened its first location outside the UK. In 2004, four years after the opening of offices in New York City, the company was converted into a Limited Liability Partnership. Since 2008, when the law firm offices in Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, Mannheim, Dusseldorf and Sao Paolo opened, more than 50 percent of sales outside London was earned. Beginning of 2009, about 10 percent of employees were laid off as part of a restructuring.

Mandates (selection)

The firm advised, among others, in the case of abdicating Edward VIII. Advised you at the first hostile takeover in the City of London and the bank SG Warburg & Co. in the output of the first Euro Bonds by the Italian Autostrada.

Guantanamo detainees

In 2004, represented Pamela Chepiga and five other attorneys at fifteen Yemeni prisoners of the United States who were interned in Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, and sent an amicus curiae letter in Rasul v. Bush procedure to the Supreme Court of the United States. Charles Stimson, the former " Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Detainee Affairs", it criticized with the words: " boards of business enterprises should ask firms to choose between lucrative mandates and the representation of terrorists. " Due to fierce criticism of this statement, also by the Ministry of Defence, Stimson resigned.
