History

The company employs approximately 6,260 employees (2006) and is headquartered in Narborough, Leicestershire. The company is listed in the FTSE 250 Index.

The company went public in 1985 from the merger of the two building societies Alliance and Leicester forth. Its roots date back to the Established in 1853, Leicester Permanent Building Society. 1997 was converted into a public limited company and the IPO on the London Stock Exchange, where it was included in the FTSE 100.

Alliance & Leicester offers insurance, deposits, bank accounts, credit cards, and various financing options.

Alliance & Leicester was acquired in July 2008 by the Banco Santander.
