Alma AdamkienÄ—

Adamkienė Alma (nee Alma Nutautaitė; born February 10, 1927 in Šiauliai) is the wife of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus and politician was during his tenure as President First Lady of Lithuania.

Life

Nutautaitė was the daughter of merchants Stasys Nutautas (1899-1977) and Ona Soblytė - Nutautienė (1904-2006) was born. After the invasion of the Red Army in Lithuania, the family fled. Your school they graduated from a German high school and then studied philology at the University of Erlangen. In 1949 she moved to the United States and later also adopted the U.S. citizenship. Initially she worked as a laboratory assistant in a steel mill, and later with an insurance company. They also provided humanitarian aid for Lithuanian emigrants.

In 1951 she married the scientist Valdas Adamkus. After his initial appointment to the presidency in the spring of 1998 Adamkienė took over as First Lady to sponsor a variety of social programs of child welfare. In 1999 she founded a named after her charity foundation.

A primary school in the village Šepeta ( Rajongemeinde Kupiškis ) bears the name of Adamkienė.
