Álmos

Álmos (* 820; ? † 895 ) was the Grand Prince of the pulling-away from Magna Hungaria Magyars. According to the legends, his father was Ügyek ( Ögyek, Ugek ), his mother Emese. However, since these names have mythological meanings ( Ügyek says in the Old Hungarian "holy" while Emese "Mother " means ), it is likely that these were just inventions of the chroniclers of later times.

The name

About the origin of its name, there are several theories. The origin saga of the Árpád dynasty reports on the " dream of Emese " (see also: the Turulsaga ), in which the mother foresaw that " from her lap a great dynasty created " whose ruler " will be kings of distant lands " but.

Another theory says that the name Álmos ' which was to seek a secondary meaning of the Latin Almus, namely "holy."

In contemporary Greek chronicles ( by Konstantinos Georgios Monachos and Leon Grammatikos ) his name appears as Salmus or Samultes.

Géza Nagy ( Az - Álmos monda. Sepsi- Szentgyörgy, 1884 ) asserts Szálmos is an old Hungarian form of " Sun". The researcher believes that the saga of Álmos is actually a sun anthem, and the birth of Álmos would symbolize the birth of the sun.

Álmos the first Grand Prince of the Magyars

The Hungarian chronicler of the Gesta Hungarorum writes Álmos was the Grand Duke of moving out from Magna Hungaria Magyars been. The people of the Magyars had then seven tribes; Nyék ( i), Megyer ( i), Kürtgyarmat, Tarjan, Jenő, Kéri, Keszi. The princes of these tribes chose Álmos to her grand prince, under whose hand united the whole Magyar people. This pact is called in the Hungarian mythology " blood pact " in which the relationships between the various princes, and between the Grand Duke and the Prince were regulated.

Probably was Álmos ' son Grand Prince Árpád, as the Magyars moved to Etelköz.

Probably died Álmos 895 in Etelköz, he was 76 years old. About the death Álmos ' the chronicles of Buda, Bratislava and Vienna, or the Chronicle of Thuróczy, also known as Chronica Hungarorum. According to these stories, he never entered the land of Pannonia ( "non potuit intrare terram Pannoniae ").
