The Old Pirineu i Aran is one of seven territories ( Ambit funcionals Territorials ), Autonomous Community of Catalonia in, which was with the Regional Plan ( Pla territorial general de Catalunya) decided in 1995 by law.

Alt Pirineu i Aran has an area of ​​5819.62 km ² and is equipped with 76 287 inhabitants (2008 ), the lowest populated territory of Catalonia. With 13.1 inhabitants / km ², the area is very sparsely populated. The territory is located in the Pyrenees, in the extreme north of Catalonia, bordering the Autonomous Community of Aragon, France and Andorra.
