Altamas Kabir

Altamas Kabir ( Bengali: আলতামাস কবির Ālatāmās Kabir, born July 19, 1948 in Calcutta) is an Indian jurist. He was from 2012 to 2013, " Chief Justice of India" ( Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India).

Childhood and education

Altamas Kabir was born in a Bengali Muslim family who preferred it to the partition of India to stay in the Indian part. His father, Jehangir Kabir, was a leading politician and trade union leaders in West Bengal. The school got Altamas Kabir et al at the Calcutta Boys' School, a more established during the British colonial period prestigious educational institution. One of his teachers was impressed by his ability to keep free speech and therefore advised him to pursue a legal career. First, however, Altamas Kabir graduated with a degree in history at Presidency College in Calcutta, before studying law at the University of Calcutta.

Career

After he had taken his MA in 1973 and LLB from the University of Calcutta, he was admitted as a lawyer and practiced in civil and criminal law in Calcutta.

On 6 August 1990 he was appointed a judge of the Calcutta High Court and was, amongst others, responsible for the computerization of the courts of the city. At the Supreme Court of India ( Supreme Court of India ), he was appointed on 9 September 2005, where he eventually the 39th Chief Justice of India on 29 September 2012. After a period of only about nine months, he went on July 18, 2013 due to reaching the age to retire. Therefore His vocation was the conclusion of a long career and not longer-term occupation of the site, as it is with his successor P. Sathasivam (* 1949).

Judgments

During his tenure as a judge of the Supreme Court of India several important judgments were given under his leadership, especially on the topics of human rights and election laws. Altamas Kabir is considered to be a staunch advocate of civil rights. In 2011, the Supreme Court of India that even female relatives of the husband under the law to protect women from domestic violence (Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005) may fall.

On 19 October 2012, he released on bail the journalist Syed Mohammed Ahmed Kazmi, who was arrested on a vehicle of the Israeli embassy for alleged involvement in an attack and should have been treated unfairly by the police.
