History

Finds indicate a prehistoric settlement. Today's church was probably built during the Reconquista. 1094 was here already own community.

King Manuel I granted city rights in 1514 Alvarenga. The circle Alvarenga included beside the homonymous municipality nor the communities CANELAS and Janarde. In the course of the various administrative reforms of the Liberal Revolution in 1822 the county Alvarenga was dissolved in 1855 and affiliated to the county Arouca.

Culture and sights

The Anta da Senhora do Monte is a Neolithic tomb, port. Anta.

Other monuments in the church are Built 1580 pillory as a sign of civic rights, the Ponte de Alvarenga from the Baroque era, and the nave Gothic parish church Igreja Paroquial de Alvarenga ( after their patron saint also Igreja de Santa Cruz, dt: Holy Cross Church), which in course of their baroque reconstruction a side Sakristeibau was added.
