Alvin Alcorn
Alvin Elmore Alcorn ( born September 7, 1912 in New Orleans, Louisiana; † July 17, 2003 ) was an American trumpeter of New Orleans jazz.
Life
Alvin Alcorn grew up in a musical family, contacts with bandleaders like George Alfred McCullum Sr. ( 1884/85-1920 ) and Henry Allen senior ( 1877-1952 ), and their sons, George McCullum Jr. ( 1906-1938 ) and Henry "Red" Allen (1908-1967) had; his brother Oliver (1910-1981) played the clarinet and saxophone.
Alcorns career began in the late 1920s in the orchestras of Armand Piron, Henry Allen Sr., the Excelsior Brass Band and Captain John Handy. With the band of Clarence Desdune he toured for the first time outside of New Orleans. In 1932 he went to San Antonio, where he was engaged until 1939, first trumpeter Don Albert Orchestra. He then played up to his military service back in New Orleans, mainly in Sidney Desvigne; then, in the early 1950s with Oscar "Papa" Celestin. In 1953 he took up with Raymond Burke. In 1954 he went to Los Angeles to Kid Ory, with whose orchestra he had in 1955 made a guest appearance in the film The Benny Goodman Story, and in 1956 was on a European tour.
End of the 1950 Alcorn returned to New Orleans; he played in the Bourbon Street including George Lewis (1958, 1965-68 ), Paul Barbarin (1959 ), Albert "Papa" French ( 1962-64 ) and Louis Cottrell Jr. (first half of the 1970s ), or with his own bands. Also at the end of the 1950s he was vice president of the local union for African-American musicians. Concert tours have taken him several more times to Europe, for example in 1966 with Keith Smith's New Orleans All Stars, 1976 Mike Casimir, 1978 Chris Barber. In the 1973 James Bond film Live and Let Die Alcorn can be seen with the Olympia Brass Band in a guest appearance and also plays a minor role. In the 1980s, he joined a trio under his direction in the restaurant Commander's Palace in New Orleanser Garden District.
Alcorn was married to Joseph Lulsbia since 1931. The marriage produced five daughters and two sons were born.
