Alyson Bailes

Alyson JK Bailes ( born April 6, 1949 in Manchester ) is a visiting professor at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik and former director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI ).

Alyson Bailes studied history at Oxford in 1970 and went into the diplomatic service.

She worked in Hungary, Germany, China, Norway and Finland. For the British government led negotiations with NATO and the European Union. She was Vice President of New York's East-West Institute and political leader of the defense alliance Western European Union in Brussels.

From November 2000 to June 2002 she was British Ambassador to Finland.

In the period from July 2002 to August 2007 she held the position of director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI ). After her time in Stockholm in 2007, she moved to the University of Iceland in Reykjavik, where she holds a position as a visiting professor.
