Amazonas Department

The Departamento de Amazonas is a large but sparsely populated province in the extreme south of Colombia. Only at the border to Peru, there are a greater number of settlements.

Geography

The department is bordered to the east by the Amazon Basin of Brazil, to the south and west by Peru. To the north lie the Colombian departments of Caquetá, Putumayo and Vaupés.

The border between the department and Peru is the middle and lower reaches of the Rio Putumayo, which flows not far from Leticia in the Amazon. Here the Departamento de Amazonas projects with a narrow spur 160 km south to the Amazon river itself, which forms the border triangle Tres Fronteras with Peru and Brazil.

Agriculture is the main industry. There are grown on inferior land corn, yuca, plantains and rice. Play more economic role of fisheries, tourism, the degradation of wood ( mahogany, cedar ) and the trade.

The rich flora and fauna, you can visit the National Park Amacayacu.

Administrative subdivision

The Departamento de Amazonas consists of two municipalities ( CM ) and nine offices (CD). The offices are characterized by the absence of urban structures. The population figures are based on the 2005 census of the DANE.
