Ambilobe

Ambilobe is a city and administrative center of the homonymous district ambilobe, part of Diana Region, in the province of Antsiranana in the north- west of Madagascar. The town is located on the National Road 6 between Ambanja and Antsiranana and the river Mahavavy. According to an estimate from 2005, the city had 14,425 inhabitants.

Agriculture and food production provide 40 % and 35 % of employment. The most important crop is sugar cane, next to cotton, rice and tomatoes are grown. In industry and services, only 13% and 2 % of the population is employed. In fishing every tenth operates.

There are primary and secondary schools as well as hospital care.

Ambilobe is a center of Madagascar still an epidemic occurring, transmitted by rat fleas plague. Especially colorful chameleons like the panther chameleon live in the rain forest residues.

Albert Zafy, President of Madagascar from 1993 to 1996, was born in ambilobe.

Ambilobe Airport ( IATA: AMB, ICAO: FMNE ) is located west of town on the coastal plain.
