Albert Zafy

Albert Zafy ( born May 1, 1927 in Betsiaka, Antsiranana Province ) is a Malagasy politician and served as of 9 March 1993 to September 5, 1996 Chairman of Madagascar.

Zafy studied medicine at the University of Montpellier. After his return to Madagascar, he was Minister of Social Affairs. After the coup Ratsiraka he was forced to resign. In 1988 he founded the National Union for Development and Democracy. At a national conference of the opposition in 1990 Zafy was elected its chairman.

1993 succeeded Zafy Ratsiraka in the first multi-party elections for almost twenty years to surpass. However Zafy could not solve economic problems and Madagascar joined so in September 1996 after a vote of no confidence (July) back. In 1997, he lost the elections against Ratsiraka.
