Américo Tomás

Américo Tomás de Deus Rodrigues [ ɐmɛɾiku dɨ dewʃ ʁudɾiɣɨʃ tumaʃ ] (also Thomaz; born November 19, 1894 in Lisbon, † 18 September 1987 in Cascais ) was Admiral and Portuguese President ( 1958-1974 ).

Prior to his controversial election, which he won by massive electoral fraud against the candidate of the opposition, General Humberto Delgado, was Tomás Salazar Secretary of the Navy in the Cabinet. Due to the Carnation Revolution toppled, he went into exile in Brazil, but returned back to Portugal in 1979.
