The Amphibian Man is a Soviet film from the year 1962. It is based on the novel by Alexander Belyayev.

Action

In the sea off the coast of unspecified southern state an enigmatic creature displaced fishermen in fear and terror. The unknown creature has human form, but it has fish scales and bulging eyes. Only one man knows the secret of the Sea Devil: The brilliant scientist Dr. Salvator, who retired in his laboratory performs his experiments. The " monkfish " is his son Ichthyander. He has the professor implanted gills as a child, as he was suffering from an incurable lung disease. Ichthyander can live on land and in the ocean. Grew up isolated, Ichthyander has now grown into a man and falls in love with the fisherman's daughter Guttiere. But a brutal businessman wants to capture the monkfish and can work as pearl divers for themselves.

Background

The film is based on the same name published in 1928 science fiction novel by the Soviet author Alexander Belyayev. Outstanding underwater shots and the elaborate equipment made ​​the film a huge success throughout the Eastern Bloc.

The German synchronization has been established by the DEFA Studio for synchronization, studio Weimar. The German premiere took place only in the GDR on 21 December 1962, its first release on DVD on March 16, 2009. The film was also in the television of the GDR and the FRG aired several times (most recently on 6 September 2013, MDR).
