Features

The moths reach forewing length 58-80 mm. The species is similar Cocytius antaeus which is larger and on the fore wings instead of a dark blue-green shimmer has only a brownish gray marbling. Also the similar style has a tooth-like reaching into the transparent areas of the hind wing between the wing veins of scales, the lack Cocytius Duponchel in the transparent region. The transparent area is in front of the wire, and M1 is shorter than the black marginal binding, which is widened in the cable M1. The range ends sharply demarcated by the black armband. The yellow spot at the base of the hind wings is partly clearly divided by the black band. The forewings have inconspicuous black lines in the disk Alber calibration between veins M3 and CuA2. The off-white Diskalfleck is kidney-shaped and lies at an angle on the front wings. The coloration of the species is uniform, but the females show more white in their coloring.

The caterpillars are green and have conspicuous, oblique, blue green stripes on the sides. Unlike Cocytius antaeus they are hairless. These features allow a good deferrals to the caterpillars of these similar Art The rear sloping side stripe is white and demarcated bluish back. Approximately in the middle of the body run one to two white diagonal stripes. On the back of a brown longitudinal line runs.

Distribution and habitat

The species is neotropisch widespread and occurs in many parts of northern South America, Central America and the West Indies, particularly common in Jamaica. To the south extends the distribution to Tucumán in northern Argentina, and Minas Gerais in southern Brazil. In the United States the kind occurs only as an occasional Irrgast.

Way of life

The moths can be observed when visiting flowers. You will be attracted at night by artificial light sources. The species is propagated throughout the year.

Flight times and caterpillars

Imagines are detected in Bolivia from March to April and from June to December.

Food of the caterpillars

The caterpillars feed on Guatteria diospyroides, Annona purpurea, Annona reticulata, Annona glabra and Xylopia frutescens and presumably also of other Annonengewächsen ( Annonaceae ).

Development

Pupation takes place in the ground. The dolls come probably by jerky movements of the earth's surface before the moths emerge. The pupal period is about three weeks.
