Felipe Poey

Felipe Poey y Aloy ( born May 26, 1799 in Havana, † January 28, 1891 ) was a Cuban naturalist and writer.

Life

Felipe Poey was born as the son of a French family in Cuba. A part of his childhood ( from the fifth to the eighth year of life ) he spent in Pau in France. After the death of his father he returned to Havana and was included in the Real Seminario de San Carlos, where he was a student of Félix Varela y Morales ( 1788-1853 ). After obtaining his law exams, he traveled to Spain in 1820, became a lawyer and worked as a professor at the National Academy for law. Because of his liberal ideas, he was forced to leave Spain in 1823 and return to Cuba.

In 1825 he traveled to Paris, where he met important zoologists of his time and co-founder of the French Society of entomology was. He worked in the laboratory of Georges Cuvier and began to write about butterflies. He provided Cuvier and Achille Valenciennes with information about fish on Cuba. He was a member of the Zoological Society of London, the Society of Friends of Natural History in Berlin, Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, the Museum and the Society of Natural History of Madrid. In 1839 he founded the Museum of Natural History in Havana. In 1842 he became professor of zoology and comparative anatomy at the University of Havana, later Dean of the Faculty of Sciences and Vice- Rector of the University.

He founded the library for Ichthyology and science and was a founding member of the Academy of Medicine, Physics and Natural Sciences and President of the Anthropological Society of Havana.

Poey worked on numerous national and international scientific publications. In 1836 he wrote the Compendium of Cuban geography ( Compendio de geografía de la Isla de Cuba ), which became the standard work and underwent numerous editions.
