Åndalsnes? / I is the main town of the municipality of Rauma in Møre og Romsdal in Norway.

Location and data

Åndalsnes has 2,231 inhabitants and is located at Longyearbyen, an arm of Romsdalsfjorden, in the northern Vestlandet in Norway. The Rauma flows into the local situation in the fjord. The place can be reached by the Rauma Railway or by car from Dombås on the E136 through the valley of Romsdal.

Many cruise ships dock in the small town harbor.

History

In the 19th century the city was the starting point for travel to and from the Romsdal Romsdal Alps. The Rauma railway line, which was completed in 1924, was the starting point in Åndalsnes. 1940, the City of bomb attacks has been almost completely destroyed.

Attractions

Åndalsnes is a favorite with tourists starting point for excursions into the surrounding area. On the railroad in the Rauma Railway runs on summer weekends a carriage with a steam locomotive museum train from Åndalsnes to Bjorli and back. Headquartered in Åndalsnes Norwegian summit museum shows the history of mountaineering in Norway. A small chapel was set up in an old Norwegian railway car directly at the train station. You can stop there and find peace. There are Bibles in different languages. The altar in the center was built from railroad ties.

Åndalsnes is also popular as a starting point for the journey over the Trollstigen which up screwed up to 18 kilometers in length with a slope of 12% in impressive switchbacks to the summit, from where you have a magnificent view before you continue towards Geiranger. The Stave Church Rødven with a nave and south porch from the 13th century is also near the town.
