Andreas Helwig

Andreas Helvigius, actually Helwig, also Helwigius or Helwich (* 1572 in Friedland (Mecklenburg ); † November 19, 1643 in Stralsund ) was a German philologist, teacher and longtime rector of the grammar school Stralsund in the former St. Catherine's Monastery.

Life

The son of Friedlander councilor Moritz Helwig and his wife Johanna, nee Wegener, first attended school in his hometown and soon moved on to the Council Anklamer school. He completed his education from Stralsund to the gymnasium, where at that time Kaspar Jentzkow was rector.

In 1591 he began studying at the University of Rostock, where at that time David Chytraeus, Johann Possel and Bacmeister Lucas the Elder. taught. After some time he moved to the University of Frankfurt (Oder). On the recommendation of Christopher, he got a job as a vice-principal in Salzwedel. However, he soon returned to Frankfurt ( Oder), from where he was appointed to the Konrektorat in his hometown of Friedland.

In 1595 he went as a vice-principal at the Greifswald city school. In 1599 he was awarded his doctorate by Lorenz Zircman Magister. Helwig operation in Greifswald Greek and German language studies and corresponded with Rhodomann Lorenz ( 1546-1606 ). Andreas Helvigius married in 1601 in Greifswald Christiana Levenstein, the daughter of the Eight 's Johann Levenstein.
