Andreas Stöberl

Andreas Stiborius ( Boius ) actually Andreas Stöberl (* around 1464 in Pleiskirchen to Altötting, † September 3, 1515 in Vienna ) was a German -Austrian astronomer, mathematician and theologian.

Life

Stiborius studied from 1479 in Ingolstadt, where he became a master in 1484. From 1497 he worked in Vienna, where he was prior of the Duke College. He belonged to the justified by Conrad Celtis Danube society, a circle of humanist scholar. In 1502 he received, in addition to John Stabius, one of the two at the Collegium poetarum et mathematical corum newly established mathematical professorships.

With Georg Tannstetter he was involved in the efforts to reform the calendar. She co-authored a report which Maximilian I - at the request of Pope Leo X - requested by the University of Vienna. In this end of 1514 completed and soon after printed reports, they suggested, skip a leap day in each 134 days. For an edition of astronomical tables ( Tabulae Eclypsium ..., Vienna 1514) wrote Stiborius two prefaces. The publisher, however, was Georg Tannstetter not - repeated erroneously stated in the literature - Stiborius. Tannstetter dedicated in 1514 his - then still living - teacher a long section in his account of the Viennese mathematician and astronomer Viri Mathematici. First Tannstetter lists the titles of 16 written by Stiborius scientific work - a remarkable number especially considering the fact that of Stiborius few printed books have been preserved. Then he leads all owned by Stiborius - of books, and are thus an impression of a former academic libraries - probably partially handwritten. The books are listed thematically: More than 20 books on astronomy, each about 10 on perspective, geometry and arithmetic, and both are about 5 on metaphysics and magic.

Stiborius 1503 canon of St. Stephen. Until his death in 1515 he was pastor in Stockerau ( near Vienna ), where he was buried.

The lunar crater Stiborius is named after him.
