Andrew Buchanan (U.S. politician)

Andrew Buchanan ( born April 8, 1780 Chester County, Pennsylvania, † December 2, 1848 in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1835 and 1839 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Andrew Buchanan attended Dickinson College in Carlisle. After a subsequent law degree in 1798 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he began in York to work in this profession. Since 1803 he lived in Waynesburg. At the same time he embarked on a political career. He was both a deputy in the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania and a member of the State Senate. In the 1820s he joined the movement to the future President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the Democratic Party, founded in 1828 by this.

In the congressional elections of 1834, Buchanan was in the 20th electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Andrew Stewart on March 4, 1835. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1839 two legislative sessions. Until 1837 there was still fiercely debated over the policies of President Andrew Jackson. Since 1837, Buchanan was the Chairman of the Election Committee.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. He died on December 2, 1848 in Waynesburg, where he was also buried.
