Andrew Phillips, Baron Phillips of Sudbury

Andrew Wyndham Phillips, Baron Phillips of Sudbury, OBE ( born March 15, 1939) is a British solicitor and politician of the Liberal Democrats.

Life and career

Phillips attended the public school in Culford and studied at Trinity Hall, Cambridge law and economics. He was then Solicitor and opened in 1970 a law firm Bates, Wells & Braithwaite, whose partner he is today.

From 1976 to 2002, he appeared on the radio program on BBC Radio 2 and was in the popular show Jimmy Young Show information about legal issues. He was also a guest in other radio and television programs such as Any Questions? and Newsnight.

He was inducted into the Order of the British Empire in 1996. 1998 Phillips was appointed to the County of Suffolk for Life peer as Baron Phillips of Sudbury, of Sudbury. He sits in the House of Lords for the Liberal Democrats, and speaks on issues of civil liberty. He was spokesman for the Liberal Democrats in their efforts to prevent a British passport and legislation to counter-terrorism.

Phillips was appointed on 28 April 2003, Chancellor of the University of Essex and so followed the December 31, 2002 excreted Lord Nolan in office after.

In July 2006, he announced his retirement from the House of Lords. Its seat should go to a successor from his party. However, since this is not possible, he took a leave of absence. The leave of absence ended in 2009, since then, Lord Phillips is again regularly in the House of Lords and speaks on various topics.

Andrew Phillips is married to Penelope Ann Bennett since 1968, the couple has a son and two daughters.
