Andrzej Tomaszewski

Stanisław Andrzej Tomaszewski ( born in 1934 in Warsaw, † October 25, 2010 in Berlin) was a Polish art historians, conservators and architects.

Life

Andrzej Tomaszewski studied architecture at the Technical University of Warsaw and history of art at the University of Warsaw. At the University of Poitiers and at the University La Sapienza in Rome, he deepened his knowledge in historic preservation and restoration. In 1976 he became a professor of architectural history and historic preservation at the Technical University of Warsaw. He taught from 1981 to 1983 at the Berlin Scientific Committee and from 1983 to 1987 at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.

Tomaszewski was 1988-1992 Director-General of ICCROM in Rome, the International Research Center for heritage conservation and restoration of cultural property. From 1995 to 1999, Tomaszewski General monument conservationist of the Polish Republic and Poland's representative in the Committee of the World Heritage by UNESCO and the Committee of the cultural heritage of Europe. He was Managing Director of the Polish National Committee of the International Council for the preservation ICOMOS, co-founder and co-chair of the working group German and Polish art historian " Common Heritage " and a member of the German Academy for Urban and Regional Planning.

Tomaszewski was general conservators of the relevant initiator of the " monuments of the German -Polish cultural heritage " as the Marienburg, the Centennial Hall ( Wroclaw ) or the Toruń Old Town, which were placed on the list of world cultural heritage. He also sought the restoration of Peace Church in Jawor and Swidnica. As a member of the German - Polish Cultural Foundation care and preservation engaged decisive for the German -Polish cooperation. In 2003 he received the German Georg Dehio Culture Award.
