Andy Aitkenhead

Andrew "Andy" Aitkenhead ( born March 6, 1904 in Glasgow, Scotland, † October 21, 1968 ) was a Scottish- Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender, who was active during his career, including for the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League.

Career

Born in Glasgow, Scotland Aitkenhead grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on. At the age of 17, he was the first time in a minor league for the Yorkton Terriers on the ice. Spent the following years the keeper with various teams from Saskatoon, where Aitkenhead as keeper of Saskatoon Nationals in calendar year 1924 reached the final series to the Allan Cup. He repeated this success two years later in the jersey of Saskatoon Empires. In November 1926, the Saskatoon Sheiks him committed from the Prairie Hockey League. 1928 had the New York Rangers goalkeeper selected at the Inter -League Draft, but he finished the season without the use of the National Hockey League. Instead, he became the season 1929/30, to the Portland Buckaroos transferred to the Pacific Coast Hockey League. After two seasons as a regular force in the PCHL the Rangers committed him again in April 1931. In the 1931/32 season he represented the Bronx Tigers in the Canadian - American Hockey League between the posts.

After the Rangers had transferred in October 1932 by General Manager Lester Patrick goalkeeper John Ross Roach to the Detroit Red Wings, Aitkenhead was first used in the National Hockey League. He made his debut on November 10, 1932 game against the Montreal Maroons. In his first NHL season, he was promoted to regular player and completed all 48 games of the regular season. Also in the eight playoff games for the Rangers Aitkenhead stood between the posts, with him in the fourth match of the final series for the Stanley Cup against the Toronto Maple Leafs scored a shutout. Thus, the goalkeeper won in his first NHL season once the Stanley Cup.

In the season 1933/34, he also played all season home of the New York Rangers and posted seven shutouts in the regular season and a shutout in the playoffs. Nevertheless, the team was defeated in the first playoff round to the Montreal Maroons. In the following season Aitkenhead stood in ten NHL games for the Rangers on the ice before he was in the position of the root goalkeeper replaced by Dave Kerr during the season. Until his career end of 1941, the Scottish- Canadian dual citizen spent his career primarily with the Portland Buckaroos in the Pacific Coast Hockey League, with which Aitkenhead 1937 and 1939 won the championship of the PCHL.

1987 Aitkenhead was honored with induction into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.
