Anglo-Scottish Cup

The Anglo - Scottish Cup was a 1975 be transferred to 1981 football cup competition for football clubs of the Scottish and English professional league system. It was created by the withdrawal of the sponsor of the Texaco Cup. After the retreat of the Scottish clubs 1981, the competition was held in 1982 and 1983 as Football League Group Cup twice only for English clubs and is therefore a predecessor of the 1983/84 resulting Football League Trophy competition.

The contest was open to each best clubs that were not qualified for the European Cup. The eight Scottish participants played out in a knockout round return match four participants in the quarterfinals, the 16 English participants first played in four four- groups in a simple round-robin tournament mode per quarter finalists. A special feature was the rule, that in addition to the then usual two- point rule a bonus point for the teams were within a few years, who scored three goals in a game.

From the quarter- finals of the competition in the Cup System was discharged with two matches (home and away ); in the quarterfinals always stood face to face with a representative of the English and Scottish leagues.

The competition was dominated by the English clubs in six sweeps succeeded only twice a representative of Scotland the finals; 1978 lost the FC St. Mirren the final against Bristol City, and two years later was the same club as the only Scottish club to win the trophy.

During the beginning quite the best non- European Cup clubs of England took part in the competition, reported with time mainly unterklassige professional clubs, so that the viewers interest just always fell further in Scotland and Scotland in 1981 withdrew from the competition.

1987/88 there was an attempt to contest as a playoff between the winners of the FA Cup and to revive the Scottish Cup again, but was due to lack of uptake for the first leg at Coventry City (1-1), which scheduled for May 1988 return match at FC St. Mirren no longer kicks.
