Texaco Cup

The Texaco Cup was a football cup competition for British and Irish football clubs that had not qualified for a European competition. The at that time in the UK market very active U.S. oil company Texaco acted as sponsor and namesake of the tournament.

In the first two seasons from 1970 to 1972 of the audience response was comparable to the "big" European club competitions, the European Champion Clubs 'Cup, the European Cup Winners' Cup and the Fairs Cup ( 1971: UEFA Cup ). Especially the English-Scottish duels were prestigious. From 1973, the English football dominated this competition, however, clear and pure English games were more frequently the rule. These were considered by the public as less attractive, as reflected in lower attendances. The Irish teams participated from 1973 due to increasing political tensions in the original tournament no longer participate and established a separate competition, which was also held under the auspices of Texaco and " Texaco Cup" was called.

With the withdrawal of sponsors Texaco in 1975 both competitions ended. The Anglo - Scottish Cup was the successor to 1981 and was the scene of another Scottish- English games.
