Aniceto Esquivel Sáenz

Aniceto del Carmen Esquivel Sáenz ( born April 18, 1824 in Cartago, Costa Rica, † October 22, 1898 in San José ) was 8 May to 30 July 1876 President of Costa Rica.

Life

His parents were Úrsula Sáenz y Ulloa and Narciso Esquivel y Salazar. On February 29, 1856 he married in San José, Ana Carazo Isaura Peralta, daughter of María Peralta y Toribia Echavarría and Manuel José Bonilla Carazo. In this marriage were born thirteen children: Julia, Jorge Adolfo, Matilde Adela ( Sor María Caridad de Sión ), Roberto, Paulina, Sara, Alfredo, Adriana, Isaura, Aniceto y Rosa Esquivel Carazo.

He studied at the Casa de Enseñanza de Santo Tomas and graduated with a degree in law at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala.

In addition to his legal practice, he was one of the founders of the Banco de la Unión, which opened in 1877. Under this name they emitted 1877-1889 money under its current name Banco de Costa Rica they emitted 1895-1899 money.

He was Judge of the Supreme Court, a member of the Constituent Assemblies of 1859, 1870 and 1880. Between 1860 and 1863 and from 1866 to 1868 he was a government minister. 1868 to 1869 he was Secretary of State in the Cabinet of Jesús Jiménez Zamora, 1870-1872 Member of the State Council under the presidency of Tomás Guardia Gutiérrez. In the years 1872-1876, 1884-1892 and 1894-1896 he was a deputy in the Parliament for San Jose and 1886-1889, and in 1891 he was the Constituent meetings before.

Presidency

The elections were held in April, 1876 according to the taste of the ruler Tomás Guardia Gutiérrez. Sáenz was elected President for the period from 1876 to 1880. He took office on 8 May 1876.
