Maximus was a descendant of the emperor Petronius Maximus from the House of Anicii. He was still young, in 523 consul. Cassiodorus says that he was admonished during his consulship, because he made use of his riches during the games. Between 525 and 535 Maximus was named Patricius, and awarded on the occasion of his marriage to a woman from the Gothic royal family 535 with the military rank of primicerius domesticus by King Theodahad. During the siege of Rome by the Goths in 537 Maximus and other senators of Belisarius was brought to safety. He was given permission by return of Rome after the lifting of the siege.
