Ankum Heights

The Ankumer height, also called Fürstauer mountains, is a 140 m high mountain range in the northern German lowlands in the western part of Lower Saxony ( Germany ).

Geography

The wooded Ankumer height which is about 20 km long and only several kilometers wide, the city of Osnabrück is located about 34 km north- north-west at the interface of the counties Emsland and Osnabrück between Heart Lake in the northwest and Bramsche in the southeast and Fuerstenau in the southwest and Bersenbrueck in Northeast. The southeastern foothills of the mountain range, represents the northwestern part of the Nature and Geopark TERRA.vita (formerly Nature Park Northern Teutoburg Forest Wiehengebirge ), extend almost to Alfsee.

East of the Ankumer height are the Dammer Berge, southeast of the west- northwest foothills of the Wiehengebirge, south of the Tecklenburger country and the northwestern foothills of the Teutoburg Forest, west of Lingen height and northwest of Hümmling, both in Emsland, and north of the Oldenburger Munsterland.

Geology

The Ankumer height is part of a glacial Endmoränenstaffel from the previous Vergletscherungsgeschehen the Saale ice age, called the Drenthe -I stage. At this phase, also known as Rehburger ice stage, which can be dated to 230,000 years before present, including the Lingener height, the Dammer Berge, the Kellenberg and Brelinger mountain, but not the Rehburger mountains on Steinhude. Along with her almost symmetrical counterpart, the Dammer mountains beyond the hare valley, stands the Ankumer height after the most prominent Gletscherlobus this ice stage. He filled the lowlands of Artland.

History

Some megalithic monuments testify that the Ankumer amount was settled to prehistoric times.
