Geographical location
Merzen located in the northwestern Bramgau south of Ankum height. There it is on the edge of the northwestern part of the Nature Park Northern Teutoburg Forest Wiehengebirge.

History
Incorporations
The church today Merzen was formed at the local government reform 1 July 1972 from the communities Döllinghausen, Engelern, Lechtrup - Merzen, Eastern and vest Roden, Plagge shell and Südmerzen.

Sage of the Turks chains
The saga of the municipal coat of arms is based is that of the Turks chains. Supposedly once took two Merzener part in a crusade to the Holy Land. They fell into Turkish captivity and were sentenced to death. In her last night they prayed, they want one last time to hear the bells of their home. You fell asleep and woke up the next morning miraculously on the Juckel Boll, a little hill near the Merzener church, awakened by the ringing for morning service.
