Anna-Seiler-Brunnen

The Anna Seiler Fountain stands in the market street in Bern and belongs to the old town of Bern fountain from the 16th century.

It was built in 1545/46 as a substitute for a fountain from the 14th century. The fountain statue depicts a female figure holding a bowl holds in one hand and with the other hand hineingiesst from a jug of water. She comes from the workshop of Hans Gieng and symbolizes probably the cardinal virtue of moderation. Since the fountain is near the cage tower, which once served as a prison, it was called originally by captivity or Kefibrunnen (after Chefi, the bern German word for " prison ").

The present name dates back to Charles Howald. He wanted to see the statue Anna Seiler, in Bern in 1354 donated a hospital. This was later called Inselspital, and so is called today the University Hospital in Bern.
