Annibale Riccò

Annibale Riccò (* September 14, 1844, † September 23, 1919 ) was an Italian astronomer.

He was born in Milan in 1868 and achieved his bachelor's degree at the University of Modena, then he studied engineering at the Milan Polytechnic. Between 1868 and 1877 he worked as an assistant at the Modena Observatory and taught mathematics and physics at the University of Modena. Later he taught in Naples and then to Palermo, where he simultaneously worked at the observatory.

1890 appointed him to the University of Catania to the Chair of Astrophysics, and Riccò was director of the observatory on Mount Etna and the first director of the Catania Observatory. From 1898 to 1900 he was Chancellor of the University.

During his career, he explored the sunspots, and he participated in four eclipse expeditions, himself led the expeditions in 1905 and 1914. He was president of the Società degli Italiani Spettroscopisti ( Italian Spectroscopic Society ) and the Gioenia di Scienze naturali di Catania. He was also Vice President of the International Astronomical Union, and was elected for the period 1919-1922 as President of Volcanology and Technology of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics ( IUGG ).
