Anthony Ellmaker Roberts

Ellmaker Anthony Roberts ( born October 29, 1803 Barneston Station, Chester County, Pennsylvania, † January 23, 1885 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1855 and 1859 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Athnony Roberts received a limited schooling. Between 1816 and 1839 he worked in New Holland in the trade. In 1839 he moved to Lancaster. From 1839 to 1842 he was sheriff in Lancaster County. In 1842 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress yet. Between 1850 and 1853 he was a U.S. Marshal for the Eastern part of the state Pennsylvania. In this capacity, he was confronted with the consequences of the compromise of 1850, when it was about to return escaped slaves back to their former owners.

In the congressional elections of 1854 Roberts was a candidate of the opposition party in the ninth constituency of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Isaac Ellmaker Hiester on March 4, 1855. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1859 two legislative sessions. Since 1857 he was a member of the Republican Party, whose construction in Pennsylvania, he co-designed. In 1858 he abandoned a bid again.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Anthony Roberts took care of his lands in Lancaster. He also served as administrator of some other properties. He died on January 23, 1885 in Lancaster. His grandson Robert Grey Bushong (1883-1951) was also a congressman.
