Anthony Rooley

Anthony Rooley ( born June 10, 1944 in Leeds ) is an English lutenist, guitarist, and music educator. He is a specialist in early music and founder of the ensemble The Consort of Musicke.

Life

Anthony Rooley studied classical guitar with Hector Quine at the London Royal Academy of Music, where he worked as a teacher for lute and classical guitar also from 1969 to 1971. At the same time he founded in 1969 along with the American lutenist James Tyler the focused especially on old English music instrumental ensemble The Consort of Musicke, whose artistic director he had ever since. The ensemble, which usually also collaborated with vocal soloists like Evelyn Tubb and Emma Kirkby, presented in the early years mainly secular music of the late Renaissance and early Baroque, continued its focus from the late 1970s, in particular madrigal music. To date (April 2011) Rooley is represented in public concerts and recordings. In addition, he was and is continued to work as a teacher. He regularly teaches since 1990 at the Basel Schola Cantorum. He has also held a visiting professorship at the Orpheus Instituut in Ghent, Belgium.
