Anti-Slavery International

Anti-Slavery International is an international organization against slavery and the oldest human rights organization in the world.

History

The roots of Anti-Slavery International date back to the first abolitionist movements to 1787. The use of these movements led to the slave trade was abolished in 1807 in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and 1833 was followed by the prohibition of slavery as a whole. Other European countries kept the slavery in their colonies at even longer.

Against this background, the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society ( society against slavery in Britain and abroad) was founded in the UK in 1839, which campaigned for the universal abolition of slavery and for an active British role in combating it. 1888 Brazil abolished slavery officially as the last state from. Unofficially, however, slavery continued to exist in many parts of the world.

In the 1890s, the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society additionally drew on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples a, which is why they are in 1909 with the Aborigines ' Protection Society ( Society for the Protection of the natives) to the Anti-Slavery and Aborigines ' Protection Society ( society against slavery and for the protection of indigenous people ) united. Today's activities

Anti-Slavery International estimates that today about 27 million people live in slavery and slavery-like conditions. The most common form of today's slavery is debt bondage, beside fought Anti-Slavery other forms as the worst forms of child labor (eg child prostitution ), child trafficking / human trafficking, forced labor, forced prostitution and in especially in Mauritania, Niger and Sudan occurring traditional forms of slavery.

Anti-Slavery International is fighting for a world without slavery by making it explores the causes and background of modern slavery and public pressure on governments and companies exercising and supports partner organizations who work for the slaves on the spot.

The U.S. sister organization of Anti-Slavery International, Free the Slaves, was co-founded by leading experts slavery Kevin Bales.
