Antoinette Perry

Mary Antoinette Perry (* June 27, 1888 in Denver, Colorado, † June 28, 1946 in New York City, New York) was an American actress, director and co-founder of the Theatre Association American Theatre Wing. According to her the Tony Award is named.

Life

Antoinette Perry was born in Denver, Colorado and strove after as a child her aunt and uncle, who were both renowned actor. After her marriage to Frank W. Frueauff in 1909 she gave up acting, but returned in 1924 after the death of her husband back to the stage. In 1928 she started the first theater productions and eventually led the production of the play My friend Harvey ( Harvey ), which became one of the most successful Broadway plays.

She was co-founder and later chairman of the American Theatre Association American Theatre Wing, which operated the so-called Stage Door Canteens during the Second World War.

A year after her death in New York called the American Theatre Wing to be awarded was named after her Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre to life with the annual outstanding achievements in the field of theater (including music theater). Today, this price is generally known by its short- form Tony Award.
