Anton Eleutherius Sauter

Anton Eleutherius Sauter ( born April 18, 1800 Großarl, Archbishopric Salzburg, † April 6, 1881 in Salzburg, Salzburg Country, Austria - Hungary ) was an Austrian botanist and physician. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Saut. ".

Life

Anton Sauter was in the former Archbishopric, the son of a nurse ( official with judicial functions ) and later kk Pfleger born. Soon the Sauter family moved to throw where 1802 Anton's brother Andrew was born. Andreas later became known as a renowned forester and was head of the State Forestry Directorate Innsbruck. His second brother was the later become known writer Ferdinand Sauter, who died with 50 years of comparatively early.

Morning woke up at Anton 's love for botany. His favorite plant was and remained the Christmas Rose (Helleborus niger), also called Christmas rose. 1807 already died Anton's father. The mother then moved with the children in the city of Salzburg. Sauter visited here from 1809 to 1812 the high school and then the College Rupertinum. Here a fruitful dialogue began with the botanist Franz Anton Alexander von Brown, in which he also took lessons. Was significantly promoted his passion for botany also of Matthias Mielichhofer. At 19 Sauter moved first into the school of philosophy in Graz and soon turned ( 1820 ) studied medicine in Vienna, where he obtained the Doctorate in medicine in 1826. His inaugural dissertation he wrote about " attempt at a geographical- botanical description of the surroundings of Vienna ". His teacher was doing the today very famous botanist Joseph Franz von Jacquin. Soon Sauter became a member of the Regensburg Botanical Society, in whose journal he published regularly.

From 1828 on, Sauter was the first assistant physician at St. John's Hospital in Salzburg Mülln, moved in the same year as the national court physician to Kitzbühel in Tyrol. In 1829, he was only in Bregenz, 1830, he was k.k. District Council in Zell am See and lived from 1838 in Mittersill. On August 21, 1871, he appeared as a highly respected and popular doctor for miles around in retirement. For his services as a doctor him the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order was awarded.

Sauter explored the flora of the country Salzburg and left behind an extensive botanical work. Many plants from the Eastern Alps were described by him for the first time. One genus and 17 species bear his name. In 1860, he was also co-founder and 1864-1874 Board of the Company for the Salzburg regional studies.
