As a trained plumber Kliegl followed in 1893 when 21- year-old his brother Johann ( 1869-1959 ), who had emigrated in 1888 to New York. There they both worked in a factory for electric arc lamps, which they bought up in 1896. In 1911 he invented the now under the name " Kliegl Light" known carbon - arc lamp, which doubles the luminosity at the same energy demand and specially used for stage lighting and when shooting movies. He developed in the silent movie era many new special effects, such as inter alia for the films " Ben Hur " and " Wizard of Oz".
