Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade

Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade ( born September 17, 1947 in Belo Horizonte ) is a Brazilian lawyer. He worked from 1995 to 2008 as a judge on the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, including from 1999 to 2004 as president. Since 2009 he has worked as a judge at the International Court of Justice.

Life

Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade was born in Belo Horizonte in 1947 and studied until 1969 Law at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in his hometown. He also acquired a 1973 LL.M. degree in the field of international law at the University of Cambridge, where he also received his doctorate in 1977. From 1978 he was professor of international law at the Universidade de Brasília, and from 1985 to 1990 as legal advisor to the Brazilian Foreign Ministry. In the 1980s, he represented his country several times as a delegate to international conferences, in addition, he was from 1990 a consultant to various international organizations and bodies of the United Nations ( UN) as the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

From 1995 he worked as a judge at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, including in 1997 as vice president from 1999 to 2004 as President of the Court. In November 2008 he was elected judge of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, where he had previously been acting in a case after nomination by Costa Rica as an ad hoc judge. His nine -year term began in February 2009.

Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade received the 2006, awarded for contributions to the effective implementation of human rights Goler - T. Butcher Medal from the American Society of International Law and 2008 awarded by the Faculty of Law at Columbia University Wolfgang Friedmann Memorial Award for outstanding achievements in the field of international law. He is a member of the Institut de Droit international, and since 2004 the Board of Trustees of the Hague Academy of International Law, where he in 1987 and 2005 in The Hague as well as 1989-2008 repeatedly taught external courses in various Latin American cities since 1997. In addition, he is a member of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law in San Remo.
