Antônio Carlos Magalhães

Antônio Carlos Magalhães ( born September 4, 1927 in Salvador, Bahia, † July 20, 2007 in São Paulo, Brazil) was a Brazilian politician and three times governor of the state of Bahia.

Magalhães studied medicine and began his political career at the age of 27 years when he was elected to the legislature from Bahia. He supported the 1964 carried out with the help of the U.S. military coup, through which the President João Goulart was overthrown. Military officials appointed him then mayor of Salvador, Brazil 's third largest city, and twice governor of Bahia state. Due to its harsh political work during the dictatorship in the years 1964-1985 he was nicknamed Toninho Malvaldeza or Tony Evil. From 1985 to 1990 he was Minister of Communications in the cabinet of President José Sarney.

In 1991 he was elected for the third time as governor of Bahia and 1994 for Senator. He also served as President of the Senate of 1997 to 2001. His son Luís Eduardo Magalhães died in 1998 at the age of 43 of a heart attack.

On 20 July 2007 Antonio Carlos Magalhães died in a hospital in São Paulo to multiple organ failure.
